UK winding-up petitions and insolvency notices as a daily JSON feed from The Gazette
Every UK winding-up petition, winding-up order, administration appointment, liquidation and creditors' meeting must be advertised in The Gazette, usually before the court hearing and weeks before Companies House records the change. That makes the Gazette notice feed the earliest structured signal that a company is in trouble, which is why insolvency practitioners, credit-risk and trade-credit teams, lenders and asset buyers read it daily. This guide explains the volumes, the notice-type codes and how to turn the feed into JSON.
Volumes (measured for the week of 11 to 17 October 2026)
| Notice type | Gazette code | Per week |
|---|---|---|
| Petitions to wind up a company | 2450 | about 140 (138 that week) |
| Appointment of administrators | 2410 | about 40 (43 that week) |
| Appointment of liquidators | 2432, 2443 | tens |
| Winding-up orders | 2452 | tens |
| Meetings of creditors, notices to creditors | 2442, 2433 | tens |
HMRC is the petitioner in about half of all winding-up petitions (56% of the 620 published in the 30 days to 17 October 2026). Other codes: 2451 petitions against partnerships, 2441 resolutions for winding up, 2503 bankruptcy orders; category G205000000 is corporate insolvency and G206000000 personal insolvency.
What each record contains
The notice itself (title, type, publication date, court, case number, hearing details, petitioner, practitioner firm, notice text and URL) and, with includeLinkedData on, the structured record behind it: company name and number for joining to Companies House, registered office and trading address, postcode, nature of business and the people and firms named. The Gazette's own data page states that its content, "unless stated otherwise, is Crown Copyright and is therefore free for you to use under the Open Government Licence. However, please note that this licence does not cover the re-use of personal data" (thegazette.co.uk/data, accessed 21 October 2026). Its terms add: "All content is available under the Open Government Licence v3.0, except where otherwise stated" (terms and conditions). Company-level data can therefore be reused with attribution; personal-insolvency notices carry personal data and need separate care.
How to run a daily feed
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/data_daemon~uk-gazette-insolvency-notices/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"service": "insolvency", "noticeTypes": ["2450", "2410"], "publishedWithinDays": 1, "onlyNewSinceLastRun": true, "includeLinkedData": true, "maxItems": 300}'
publishedWithinDays: 1 is a rolling window counted from today; onlyNewSinceLastRun makes the API remember the notice ids it has delivered (for 180 days, in a key-value store in your own Apify account) so a daily schedule returns each notice once and never charges for the rest. Add text: "Revenue and Customs" for HMRC petitions only, a town name for a region, or a practitioner firm. The ready-made example "UK corporate insolvency notices, last 48 hours" returned 100 notices with 98 structured records in seconds on 21 October 2026.
What it costs
$2 per 1,000 notices plus $3 per 1,000 linked-data records, so $5 per 1,000 notices with full structure. A daily petitions feed (about 140 a week) costs about $3 a month; petitions plus administrations plus liquidations about $5 a month; a one-year back-fill of petitions (about 7,000) about $35.
Questions and answers
Why read The Gazette instead of Companies House?
Timing. A winding-up petition is advertised in The Gazette before the hearing; Companies House usually shows the change weeks later, after the order. For early warning the Gazette is the source.
Which notice codes should a credit team watch?
2450 (petitions to wind up companies) for the earliest signal, 2410 (administrators appointed) and 2432/2443 (liquidators appointed) for confirmed insolvency, 2452 (winding-up orders) for the court outcome.
Can I filter to one region or one petitioner?
Yes. Use the text field for a town, a company name, a practitioner firm or Revenue and Customs; then filter the output on postcode or address for finer regions.
Is the data free to reuse?
Gazette notices are Crown copyright under the Open Government Licence v3.0; reuse company-level data with attribution and handle the personal data in personal-insolvency notices under data-protection law.
